Meetings are suspended until June at which time the situation will be reviewed.
We have had an eventful year with interesting speakers, workshops and several outings. The Oxfordshire Federation of WI’s celebrated its 100th birthday this year and so the Annual Meeting was held at the Kassam Stadium and the guest speaker was Helen Sharman, the first British woman to go into space; an inspiration to us all.
North Leigh WI also celebrated its centenary and four members from South Leigh went to Freeland village hall for afternoon tea with 70 ladies from other local WIs. We joined SLUG in February for a tour of Worcester College gardens to see the hundreds of varieties of snowdrops.
We spent two meetings enjoying each other’s 'Dessert Island Discs' with explanations of why each piece of music had been chosen.
Two workshops were arranged in the village hall. The first was a pottery painting workshop, decorating a mug, a plate or a bowl each. The results were very good indeed. The second workshop was block printing on a tea towel and making cards. A new skill was learned.
In May we went to Hanbury Hall, a National Trust house & garden in Worcestershire. We kept our technological skills up to date with a visit to the studio kitchen of Thermomix in Witney where a computerised cooker was demonstrated. Then we all ‘had a go’ making lunch and sitting down and consuming the result. It’s an amazing bit of very expensive kit but could be useful for the disabled or anyone on their own who cannot cook. The dahlias were an amazing spectacle at Aston Pottery garden where we had a conducted tour by the owner who seemed to work a 25 hour day making pots and gardening. The outings the Oxford Federation of WIs organise are many and varied, and it is lovely to be taken by coach and dropped at the door.
We meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 2:30pm in the winter in the Village Hall. We are preparing an interesting programme for next year and the details will be made available on the calendar page.
Do join us if you can. We will be delighted to see you and you are assured of a warm welcome.
